Governor Maura Healey Suspends Gas Tax For Two Months as Prices Continue to Increase

Governor Maura Healey announced Tuesday, September 22, that she filed legislation to suspend the Massachusetts gas tax for two months as gas prices continue to rise because of the Iran War.
The proposal came after her Republican gubernatorial opponent, Michael Minogue, proposed a “gas tax holiday” that would suspend the state’s gas tax whenever prices rise to $4 a gallon. Healey’s idea was deciding to suspend the state’s 24-cent-per-gallon tax on gas and diesel for a two-month period, starting a week after signing the legislation into law.
According to AAA, “the legislation is intended to provide temporary relief to residents as the price of gas remains high, currently hovering around $4.40 a gallon, up more than $1.25 since last year.”
However, Healey explained that the issue is much different with the Iran War; the two-month suspension would directly benefit Massachusetts, with an approximation of $120 million in relief.
The lost revenue would be restored with “projected, unbudgeted Fiscal Year 2027 Fair Share surtax collections,” according to Healey, and therefore the funding would not decrease for other projects.
Healey would continue to address the problem with President Donald Trump to quit the war in Iran, which is driving the skyrocketing gas and diesel prices.
“My two-month suspension does give time for common sense to prevail,” said Healey. “I hear everybody calling on Donald Trump to end this war … and help the American people. We can’t afford this, people cannot afford what they’re seeing right now when it comes to the cost of gas and diesel and heating oil. It needs to stop.”
