PERADENIYA, SRI LANKA  Marking nearly a century of profound impact on higher education, the University of Peradeniya celebrated its 84th anniversary on July 1, 2026. The milestone was commemorated with the annual Founder's Day and Alumni Excellence Award Ceremony, paying tribute to its visionary founder, Sir Ivor Jennings, and honoring the outstanding contributions of its alumni to the nation and the world.

The Genesis of a Vision: From Colombo to Peradeniya

The story of the University of Peradeniya is deeply intertwined with Sri Lanka’s journey toward independence and intellectual sovereignty. Established initially as the University of Ceylon on July 1, 1942, in Colombo, the institution was the realization of a long-standing dream to have a fully-fledged, autonomous university in the country.

The pivotal shift occurred under the brilliant stewardship of Sir Ivor Jennings, the founding Vice-Chancellor. A distinguished British jurist and constitutional expert, Sir Ivor envisioned an institution that moved away from the congested urban setting of Colombo. Drawing deep inspiration from his alma mater, the University of Cambridge, he sought to create a residential university nestled in a serene environment conducive to holistic learning and critical thinking.

The breathtaking landscape of Peradeniya flanked by the Mahaweli River and the Hanthana Mountain Range was chosen for this purpose. Architect Sir Patrick Abercrombie and Clifford Holliday meticulously designed the campus to blend traditional Sri Lankan architectural motifs with modern educational infrastructure, creating what is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful university campuses in the world. By 1952, the university officially moved to its permanent home in Peradeniya, later adopting its current name in 1978.

A Morning of Tribute and Continuity

The 84th anniversary celebrations commenced with the traditional garlanding of the statue of Sir Ivor Jennings. The solemn ceremony was attended by an esteemed gathering, including the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, the Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, alongside the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and the Deans of all nine faculties.

Following the floral tributes, a ceremonial tree-planting event was held on the campus grounds. This act symbolized environmental stewardship, institutional growth, and the university’s enduring commitment to nurturing future generations of thinkers, leaders, and innovators.

Honoring Excellence: The Alumni Awards

To bridge the university’s historic legacy with its contemporary global impact, the Alumni Excellence Award Ceremony was organized for the second consecutive year. The ceremony served as a prestigious platform to recognize 22 outstanding alumni including senior academics, corporate leaders, public servants, and dynamic young trailblazers who have achieved national and international distinction.

The keynote Founder’s Day address was delivered by a former Chairman of the University Grants Commission, who highlighted the pivotal role the University of Peradeniya has played in shaping the socioeconomic, cultural, and political fabric of Sri Lanka.

"For over eight decades, this institution has not merely produced graduates; it has shaped the intellect of a nation. This ceremony cements a beautiful tradition of honoring those who continue to carry the spirit of Peradeniya into the global arena."

The successfully executed event was organized by a dedicated committee of academic and administrative staff. As the University of Peradeniya looks toward a century of academic service, the 2026 Founder's Day stood as a powerful reminder of how a vision conceived 84 years ago continues to inspire world-class excellence today.
