Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Thushari Tennakoon has appealed to motorists to avoid travelling into Nuwara Eliya during nighttime hours, warning of increased landslide risks brought on by the prevailing adverse weather conditions.
Speaking at a media briefing held by 11th Thursday at the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat, Tennakoon highlighted that the advisory follows a fresh earth mound collapse along the Gampola–Nuwara Eliya main road in the Katukithula area. The affected stretch had only recently been reopened to traffic, but she noted that ground instability continues to threaten the safety of road users.
Addressing the broader impact of the ‘Ditwah’ cyclone, the District Secretary assured that all essential relief measures—including the distribution of food and emergency supplies—have already been delivered to affected communities.
Tennakoon also dismissed claims circulating among certain groups suggesting shortcomings in the government’s relief efforts. She emphasized that these allegations are baseless and appear to be attempts to mislead the public and disrupt ongoing government operations.
