Florida Plane Crash Kills Nine as Bahamas-Bound Learjet Goes Down Near Homes

The Florida plane crash on Sunday, 1 November 2026, killed all nine people aboard a private jet travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. The aircraft came down in a residential area of Palm Beach County, close to homes and a busy roadway. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths, while federal authorities began investigating what caused the aircraft to fall.
The aircraft was a Learjet 60 that had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for North Eleuthera Airport. It crashed at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office closed the affected roads and asked motorists to avoid the area as emergency teams responded.
Videos recorded from nearby vehicles showed the jet descending steeply before striking the ground and bursting into flames. The impact left a large crater beside the road, with broken pavement and aircraft debris scattered around the site. The crash occurred close to a mobile-home community, leaving residents facing an emergency only a short distance from their homes.
Air traffic control recordings have provided information about the flight’s final moments. According to CNN, the pilot initially reported ice accumulating on the aircraft and moderate turbulence. Shortly afterwards, the crew issued a mayday call as the jet began losing altitude rapidly. Flight-tracking information cited by CNN showed a descent of approximately 27,000 feet in one minute before the data stopped.
The recordings describe a rapidly worsening emergency, but they do not establish its cause. Storms were present in the area, and CNN reported that the aircraft had passed through a stronger storm cell before descending. Investigators have not confirmed whether weather, icing, a technical problem or another factor caused the crash. Reports about the conditions must therefore be separated from any eventual finding about why the aircraft went down.
The Florida plane crash also disrupted the surrounding neighbourhood. County officials said approximately 600 residents needed evacuation or shelter arrangements, with people being relocated to two shelters. Access to a nearby mobile-home community was affected by the crash site. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of people on the ground being injured or killed.
Authorities had not publicly identified the nine people aboard in the reports reviewed. They had also not confirmed how many were passengers and how many were crew members. FOX 13 reported that the aircraft’s registration was N722BD and that the National Transportation Safety Board, or NTSB, was sending an investigation team to Florida.
The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, is supporting the investigation. Aircraft manufacturer Bombardier said it would cooperate. Investigators now face the task of establishing the sequence of events behind the sudden descent. Until their findings are released, the confirmed picture remains a fatal private-jet crash, nine deaths aboard the aircraft and substantial disruption to the community around the impact site.
