During a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on October 10, President Donald Trump suggested that either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean could be renamed the “Trump Ocean” or the “Ocean of the Americas.” The remarks drew laughter and applause from some members of the audience, according to media reports.
Trump presented the idea as part of his broader interest in changing geographical names to reflect American identity. However, he did not announce a formal proposal to rename either ocean, and no official process to make such a change was announced at the rally.
The comments follow earlier naming changes promoted by the administration, including the use of “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in U.S. federal contexts. Those changes generated debate over geography, national identity and the authority of governments to determine official place names.
Renaming an ocean would present a much more complicated international challenge. The Atlantic and Pacific oceans are recognized worldwide, and changing their names in international usage would require broad acceptance among governments, geographical organizations and map publishers.
The proposal also highlights how geographical names can become part of wider political debates. Supporters of the president's approach may view such initiatives as expressions of national pride, while critics may regard them as symbolic distractions from economic and other policy concerns.
The remarks came as Trump campaigned ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, when control of Congress will be at stake. The rally also included discussion of the administration's domestic and foreign policy priorities.
For now, the suggestion remains a campaign remark rather than an established government initiative. Neither ocean has been officially renamed, and both continue to be known internationally by their existing names.
