Boston, Massachusetts — What started as a routine tragic flight that became a voyage nightmare for a lot of people returning to Massachusetts on Tuesday, October 5.

A Delta Airlines flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Boston was deflected to Bermuda because of a medical emergency. The unusual situation created a 4-hour flight lasting about 30 hours.

Damaris Montanez, a Springfield Resident, made a response.

“We got stuck on an airplane for basically almost three hours and finally just got out,” said Montanez.

A Delta Airlines spokesperson explained that the crew took a time-off, and therefore, the passengers were placed in the hotel overnight. Travelers found this experience to be chaotic.

“By the time we got to the hotel in Bermuda, it was like 3, 3:30 in the morning,” said Montanez.

Luz Rodriguez, Lowell Resident, shared about his personal experience.

“I didn’t get into a hotel until 3 in the morning, and then at 6:40 they’re knocking on the door, and we had to get back on the shuttle bus to get back to the airport,” said Rodriguez.

After spending the night at the hotel on Monday, October 5, passengers were sent back to the Bermuda airport early Tuesday, on October 6, however, it continued with delays. The flight was sent to Boston, and therefore travelers could not deplane for hours because of the custom problem.

“People are hungry, babies are crying, no diapers, elderly people who need medical attention,” said Rodriguez.

The diversion to Bermuda on what began as a travel nightmare that became an enormous problem due to the majority of people on board that they did not have their passports. Yet, they continued to wait for hours to clear customs in Boston.

“When we came back into the states, they should’ve already had that set plan for how they were going to do it. No, they waited for us to get here to set up a plan,” said Montanez.

Amanda Cintron, who was on the light, shared her personal story about this horrific incident.

“They verified, reverified, and triple verified that I was a citizen, so they let me go,” said Cintron.

Passengers expressed that they were excited about the flight departing to support the man in need, however, it felt the entire situation was unsuccessfully handled.

Delta Shared a Statement.

“The safety of our customers and crew comes before all else, and we thank our customers for their patience and understanding.”
