The famous Japanese actress and singer Miho Nakayama was found dead in the bathtub of her Tokyo home on Friday at the age of 54.

Nakayama gained fame in the 1980s and 1990s as an icon of J-pop, before gaining wider recognition with her role in the 1995 film Love Letter. Her heart-wrenching performance as a bereaved widow who exchanges letters with a stranger won her numerous best actress awards and sealed her status as one of Japanese cinema's leading ladies. The film was a domestic box office hit and an international critical darling.

The actress' death was announced after she did not show up to work, prompting an acquaintance to go check on her and then call paramedics. Medical personnel pronounced her dead upon arrival, according to local reports. Investigations have been launched into the cause of death.

Nakayama had been set to appear at a Christmas concert in Osaka on Friday, but called in sick earlier, according to organizers.

A statement from her agency provided on her official website, now confirmed the sad news as the following: "We are stunned by the suddenness of this news." Her agency said the cause of the death was still unknown.

At the peak of her career, Nakayama was hailed as one of Japan's most popular teen idols and smoothly transitioned between music and acting. Other than her immense professional success, she is survived by a son, who remains in the custody of her ex-husband, musician Hitonari Tsuji.

Her death is a great loss to the entertainment world of Japan and leaves behind a legacy of artistic brilliance.
