LPU Protests Erupt After Allegation of Girl Being Raped Inside University Hostel, Raising Questions Over Student Safety

JALANDHAR, PUNJAB — September 27, 2026: Large scale student protests erupted at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab following reports of an alleged rape involving a female student, with students demanding answers over campus safety and the protection of women living in university accommodation.
The incident has triggered widespread concern among students and raised serious questions about security inside university hostels, access to student accommodation, institutional responsibility and the procedures followed when allegations of sexual violence are reported.
According to reports, an allegation of rape involving a female student circulated among students during the early hours of Sunday, prompting protests on the university campus. The demonstrations subsequently escalated, with reports of clashes, property damage and disruption on the Jalandhar–Phagwara highway.
However, authorities have not established the rape allegation as a fact. Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said police had not found evidence substantiating the allegation at that stage and had not received a formal complaint, according to The Tribune.
The distinction is important. An allegation of sexual violence must be investigated seriously and independently, but it should not be presented as an established fact before competent authorities determine what occurred.
At the same time, the incident has intensified concerns among students about whether women living in university hostels are adequately protected.

University hostels are intended to provide students with a secure living environment. When an allegation involves an incident reportedly connected to hostel accommodation, questions naturally arise regarding access control, security arrangements, visitor policies and the ability of unauthorized individuals to enter student residential areas.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN NEXT?
The immediate priority should be establishing the facts surrounding the allegation through a transparent and lawful investigation. If a crime occurred, those responsible should face the legal consequences established under Indian law. If the allegation is found to be unsubstantiated, that conclusion should also be communicated through appropriate lawful channels. At the same time, universities can use incidents such as this to examine whether their existing hostel-security systems, emergency response procedures, complaint mechanisms and student-support services are adequate. The central issue is ultimately simple:
Every student deserves to feel safe where they study and live. The LPU protests have placed that principle at the centre of public attention. As authorities continue to establish what happened, students, parents and the wider public will be watching for clear answers, responsible investigation and appropriate action based on evidence.
