Rally Defends African American History Museum Against Political Pushback

Several hundreds of protesters marched in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to rally around the National Museum of African American History and Culture amid increasing worries about political meddling in teaching and preserving U.S. history.

The #HandsOffOurHistory protest was held following President Donald Trump signing an executive order called Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History, which critics argue is aimed at race-based education and against institutions such as the Smithsonian for bringing to light systemic racism.

Demonstrators marched from City Hall to the museum on the National Mall, chanting and carrying signs that read, "History should be taught, not erased" and "We take our history Black."

This is not only about politics—this is about defending truth," National Coalition on Black Civic Participation President Melanie Campbell stated. "Our history is important, and we won't be silenced.

Organizers such as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) referred to the event as the start of a broader movement to push back against efforts to limit Black history education. Additional actions, including a national awareness campaign, are organized in the next few weeks.
