In the wake of a troubling shooting near the White House that left two members of the United States National Guard critically wounded, Donald Trump has called for a sweeping re-examination of all Afghan nationals admitted to the United States under the previous administration. The suspect, identified as a 29-year-old Afghan national who reportedly entered the country in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, was taken into custody after being wounded during the confrontation.

In a televised address Wednesday night, Trump condemned the shooting as an “act of terror” and blamed what he described as lax migration policies under the former administration. He vowed that his administration would “re-examine every single alien who entered our country from Afghanistan” and remove those who “do not belong here or add benefit to our country.”

Shortly afterward, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it had indefinitely suspended processing all immigration requests involving Afghan nationals, pending a full review of security and vetting protocols. The agency stated that this freeze was necessary to safeguard national security and ensure the safety of American citizens.

The decision marks a sharp shift in U.S. immigration policy toward Afghan evacuees and asylum-seekers admitted since 2021. Critics warn that this move risks stigmatizing thousands of refugees who underwent extensive screening before admission. Meanwhile, supporters of the policy argue that the re-examination is a necessary measure to prevent future threats, pointing to recent events as justification.c
