Perched on the 68th floor of the Westin hotel in downtown Atlanta, new Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Joe Gruters looked out over the city skyline and outlined the stakes of the 2026 midterm elections.

“If Democrats win back control of Congress, Donald Trump’s presidency is basically over,” Gruters, 48, told USA TODAY. A longtime Trump ally from Florida, Gruters has been tasked with steering the GOP through a high-stakes election cycle as the president’s approval ratings slide and Democrats eye a comeback.

Despite sagging poll numbers, Trump’s approval rating recently dropped to 38% in a Pew survey Republicans are rallying behind the president’s push to cement GOP dominance. At the RNC’s summer meeting in Atlanta, party leaders embraced Trump’s call for mid-decade redistricting, tighter voting laws, and a campaign agenda focused heavily on cultural battles.

Trump himself has been directly involved in shaping strategy, urging GOP-controlled states like Texas, Florida, and Missouri to redraw congressional maps in Republicans’ favor. He has also floated an executive order to restrict mail-in voting, a move Democrats say is designed to suppress turnout.

“The president’s committed to winning. The party’s committed to winning,” Gruters said, defending Trump’s full-throttle approach.

Republicans argue that Trump’s record on issues like immigration and transgender athletes will resonate with moderates, while Democrats warn his second-term agenda is authoritarian in tone.

Democrats have blasted Republicans’ redistricting efforts as blatant gerrymandering. Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder accused Trump of trying to “rig the system” to avoid defeat. In response, Democrats in California quickly advanced their own redrawn congressional map to offset GOP gains in Texas.

With both parties racing to secure favorable electoral maps, the battle for control of the House is already intensifying nearly two years before voters head to the polls.

Florida remains a critical testing ground. Under Gruters’ leadership as state party chair, Republicans turned the state from purple to solidly red, aided by voter registration drives and election law changes backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Trump’s 2024 margin of victory in Florida more than 13 points underscored the state’s rightward shift.

Now, Florida Republicans say another round of redistricting could deliver up to four additional GOP-leaning seats heading into 2026. “It’s our turn,” said Missouri RNC member David Lightner.

Historically, the party in power loses congressional seats in the midterms, and Trump’s polarizing policies — from mass deportations to sweeping tariff hikes are energizing Democratic opposition. Economic headwinds, including rising inflation and slowing job growth, add further uncertainty.

Still, Republican leaders insist they are positioned to withstand the backlash. Vice President JD Vance and other party heavyweights used the Atlanta meetings to rally support and highlight what they call Trump’s “remarkable” record of change.

Whether that message resonates with voters or fuels a Democratic resurgence will define not just the 2026 elections but the legacy of Trump’s second term.

One of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, erupted for the second consecutive day on Saturday, hurling a massive column of ash and volcanic debris up to 18 kilometers into the atmosphere and blanketing surrounding villages in thick residue.

According to Indonesia’s Geology Agency, the eruption began early Saturday morning and was preceded by a powerful explosion on Friday night, which sent ash clouds soaring 10 kilometers high and illuminated the night sky with glowing lava and lightning bursts. Both eruptions occurred within a five-hour span, triggering widespread concern among residents and officials.

The agency reported that searing pyroclastic flows a dangerous mix of gas, rocks, and lava cascaded as far as 5 kilometers down the volcano’s slopes. Drone footage captured intense magma movement inside the crater, accompanied by seismic tremors recorded on nearby monitors.

Volcanic material, including hot gravel the size of thumbs, was ejected up to 8 kilometers from the crater, covering neighboring towns and rice fields in a blanket of gray ash. Authorities have warned locals to remain alert, particularly due to heavy rains that could cause lahars (volcanic mudflows) in rivers connected to the volcano.

The volcano, located on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara province, stands at 1,584 meters and has remained at Indonesia’s highest alert level since June 18. The government has doubled the exclusion zone to 7 kilometers, advising residents to evacuate from high-risk zones.

In the wake of previous eruptions including a deadly sequence in November that claimed nine lives and destroyed thousands of homes the Indonesian government has permanently relocated thousands of residents from the high-risk areas surrounding Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Saturday’s explosion ranks among Indonesia’s most powerful volcanic events since the 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi, which killed more than 350 people and displaced hundreds of thousands on Java island.

This recent eruption also comes just weeks after a major explosion on July 7, which disrupted air travel across Bali, forcing delays and cancellations at Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Indonesia, an archipelago of over 280 million people, is home to 120 active volcanoes and lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The country routinely experiences volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

So far, no casualties have been reported from the latest activity at Lewotobi Laki-laki. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge citizens to comply with evacuation orders and stay informed through official channels.

Eli Lilly

Eli Lilly surged ahead of Wall Street expectations for the second quarter of 2025, buoyed by soaring demand for its blockbuster diabetes and weight loss drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound. The pharmaceutical giant also released promising data from a late stage trial of its experimental obesity pill, orforglipron, and issued a strong upward revision to its full year guidance.

The company now projects 2025 revenue between $60 billion and $62 billion, up from its prior range of $58 billion to $61 billion. Adjusted earnings per share are expected to hit between $21.75 and $23, up from earlier estimates of $20.78 to $22.28.

Second-quarter revenue reached $15.56 billion, a 38% year-over-year increase, topping analyst forecasts of $14.71 billion. Earnings per share came in at $6.31 adjusted, beating the $5.57 expected by analysts polled by LSEG.

Eli Lilly’s diabetes drug Mounjaro pulled in $5.2 billion, a 68% increase from the previous year, while Zepbound, its weight loss counterpart, generated $3.38 billion, up 172% from the same quarter in 2024. Both drugs, based on the active ingredient tirzepatide, exceeded sales expectations and continue to lead the global market in their categories. “Tirzepatide, which powers both Mounjaro and Zepbound, is on track to become the bestselling drug in the industry by its third year on the market,” said CEO David Ricks on CNBC’s Squawk Box. “We’re seeing strong growth, and our innovation pipeline remains robust.”

Eli Lilly also released long anticipated late stage trial results for orforglipron, its oral obesity treatment. The trial showed that the highest dose helped patients lose more than 12% of their body weight. While promising, the figure came in slightly below Wall Street’s loftier expectations, contributing to a 12% drop in shares during premarket trading.

Despite the stock reaction, analysts remain optimistic about the drug’s long-term potential, noting the growing demand for effective oral alternatives to injectable weight-loss medications.

U.S. revenue jumped 38% to $10.81 billion, driven by a 46% increase in prescription volume, primarily for Mounjaro and Zepbound. However, Eli Lilly noted that lower realized prices partially offset the volume growth.

Net income for the quarter totaled $5.66 billion, or $6.29 per share, up from $2.97 billion, or $3.28 per share, during the same period last year. Excluding one-time items, adjusted EPS stood at $6.31.

While Eli Lilly’s current performance is robust, the company is preparing for potential challenges ahead. President Donald Trump has revived his “most favored nation” pricing policy, which aims to align U.S. drug prices with lower rates abroad. He has also warned pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly, to take action on pricing by September 29 or face possible penalties.

Additionally, Trump’s new tariffs on pharmaceutical imports could further complicate matters. Eli Lilly’s current guidance reflects existing tariffs as of August 7, but excludes any future levies yet to be implemented.

Despite market jitters over drug pricing policy and trial results, Eli Lilly remains a dominant force in the pharmaceutical industry, with its pipeline and performance exceeding most analyst expectations. “We’re excited about what’s ahead,” said Ricks. “We continue to innovate, deliver value for investors, and most importantly, improve the lives of patients around the world.”
