Colombo, 2/22/2025 Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has announced a firm crackdown on criminal gangs operating across the country. In a decisive move to curb rising organized crime, law enforcement agencies have been instructed to intensify operations against underworld activities, illegal drug networks, and other illicit enterprises.
Addressing the media, Acting IGP Weerasuriya emphasized that criminal gangs pose a significant threat to public safety and national security. He assured that the police force would take all necessary measures to dismantle these networks and hold those responsible accountable under the full extent of the law.
“We will not tolerate any form of organized crime that disrupts peace and stability in the country. The police will implement comprehensive strategies, including intelligence-led operations, community policing, and enhanced surveillance to identify and apprehend criminals,” he stated.
As part of the initiative, special task forces have been deployed in high risk areas, and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies has been strengthened. Additionally, the authorities are focusing on disrupting financial channels that fund gang related activities and enhancing cyber monitoring to track illicit transactions.
The Acting IGP also urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing information on suspicious activities. He assured that informants' identities would be protected and encouraged communities to work closely with the police to create a safer environment.
The government and law enforcement agencies are committed to ensuring a crime-free society, and this rigorous crackdown is expected to deliver significant results in the fight against organized crime. Regular updates on the progress of these operations will be provided to the public to maintain transparency and build trust.
With these renewed efforts, authorities remain confident in their ability to dismantle criminal networks and restore law and order across the nation.
