WASHINGTON D.C. — In a series of predawn posts that sent global markets into a tailspin, President Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform to announce a major military escalation in the Middle East. Dubbed "Project Freedom," the directive marks a radical shift in U.S. naval strategy, specifically targeting the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomacy by Digital Decree
Early Monday morning, Trump posted a message that bypassed traditional diplomatic channels, claiming the U.S. would begin escorting neutral commercial ships through the Iranian-controlled strait.
"Countries from all over the World... have caused the US to free up ships 'locked up' in the key strait," Trump wrote. "I have told my Representatives to inform them that we will use best efforts to get their Ships and Crews safely out."
While Trump framed the move as a "humanitarian gesture" to aid the global economy and even the "Country of Iran," the reality on the water was far more volatile. Within hours of the post, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American forces had already destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted several cruise missiles and drones launched from the coast.
A Divided Global Response
The reaction from world leaders was swift and largely critical. French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking from a summit in Armenia, expressed deep concern over the lack of international coordination. "We are not going to take part in any military operation in a framework that to me seems unclear," Macron stated, advocating for a joint U.S.-Iran reopening of the shipping lanes instead of unilateral force.
The Truth Social Factor
This "posting spree" highlights the ongoing tension between Trump’s preference for social media-driven policy and the structured nature of international law. Legal experts are already noting that these posts are being used in domestic courts to challenge the administration's "pretext" for military action. As "Project Freedom" moves forward, the world watches the Truth Social feed as much as the horizon of the Persian Gulf, waiting to see if a single tweet will be the spark that leads to full-scale conflict.
