After a high-profile trip to Asia and a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Donald Trump returned to Washington on Thursday for a lighter presidential duty handing out candy to children at the White House Halloween celebration.
Families lined the driveway of the White House, eagerly waiting for their turn to collect jumbo Hershey’s bars and packets of Twizzlers from President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Neither opted for a costume, though the president’s signature red hat made an appearance.
The White House was festively illuminated with orange lights and jack-o’-lanterns as “Thriller” by Michael Jackson played in the background. The Trumps smiled and waved as they greeted children from administration staff, military and law enforcement families, as well as foster and adoptive families invited for the occasion.
Standing before a long line of guests, Trump appeared pleased with the turnout. “It’s a long line,” he remarked. “It’s almost as big as the ballroom,” referring to the new 90,000-square-foot East Wing ballroom under construction nearby.
The Halloween celebration continues a long-standing White House tradition that began in 1958 under First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. Over the years, presidential couples have often joined the festivities in costume from Bill and Hillary Clinton dressing as James and Dolley Madison to Jill Biden donning butterfly wings in 2022.
This year’s event offered a brief moment of levity amid ongoing political tensions and policy debates in Washington. For a few hours, the nation’s capital turned its focus from global diplomacy and domestic challenges to something far simpler children, candy, and the spirit of Halloween.
