Walmart has just unveiled what may be one of the sweetest hourly jobs in the retail world both literally and financially. The retail giant confirmed that, outside of management roles, cake decorators are the highest-paid hourly associates in U.S. Walmart stores.

Earning an average of $19.25 per hour, more than 6,000 cake decorators nationwide bring artistic flair and flavor to Walmart’s extensive bakery operations.

Far from just piping frosting, the role of a cake decorator at Walmart involves ordering products, applying edible cake imaging, and maintaining production flow. The demand spikes during peak seasons such as graduations, with Walmart reportedly decorating over 150,000 cakes weekly.

Walmart also promotes creativity and trend-spotting among its decorators. One standout employee, Melissa Fernandez, a 36-year-old decorator from New Jersey, gained widespread attention on TikTok for her cake designs attracting nearly half a million views. With 11 years of experience, Fernandez now earns around $24.40 per hour, she told the Associated Press.

"I love baking at home. I love painting," Fernandez said. "I love doing anything artistic, and I just always wanted to be a part of it."

How to Become a Walmart Cake Decorator

To apply for a cake decorator position at Walmart, candidates must:

• Be at least 18 years old

• Have at least six months of experience in fresh production

• While cake decorating experience is preferred, it is not a strict requirement

The position is open across various locations, including Reno, Nevada; Flagstaff, Arizona; Brooksville, Florida; and Latham, New York, among others.
