McDonald’s announced that it would invest $8.5 billion over the next decade to update its restaurants globally.

Fast-food traffic in many markets worldwide, such as the United States, is down; therefore, McDonald’s would continue to increase to gain share from competitors and adjust restaurant operations, McDonald’s Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski explained while meeting with investors at the company’s Chicago headquarters. McDonald’s decided to take on more tasks immediately, including inventory and scheduling, and improve kitchen operations.

“The winners will be the companies that create more demand and deliver it more efficiently,” said Kempczinski.

McDonald’s claims a decrease of almost 5% at their largest percentage since April 2025, as investors shuddered at the eye-opening price of adjusting McDonald’s 46,000 international stores.

On the product side, McDonald’s explained that hand-breaded chicken, which was released in 10,000 restaurants in Asia and a couple of restaurants near Chicago, Illinois, has upgraded sales and quality ratings. Many of McDonald’s competitors, Chick-fil-A and KFC, provide hand-breaded chicken. The company plans to expand its testing to provide more markets in the United States and Ireland the following year.

McDonald’s is making plans to introduce grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps in the United States and other markets and is experimenting with their products, including egg bites and bowls, to meet the needs of customers who are looking for more protein and varied portion sizes.

Skye Anderson, the President of McDonald’s USA, explained that around 30 million Americans are now participating in GLP-1 weight loss drugs, and they are looking for smaller, more protein-concentrated meals consequently. However, the company’s research shows that 60 million Americans are seeking more protein in their diet.

Anderson shared a statement at the McDonald’s Investor Day.

“This is an opportunity. We need to keep giving them more reasons to make McDonald’s their first choice,” said Anderson.

McDonald’s explained that the restaurant modernizations include lockers to handle delivery orders, more visible coffee preparation areas to intensify quality perceptions, enormous play areas, and improved kitchen playouts. Scales to support ensure order accuracy – which has recently been used at 10,000 restaurants internationally – would be in 20,000 restaurants by 2028.

The company is implementing its ArchIQ system, created with Google, that adjusts order accuracy with artificial intelligence and automates tasks including inventory management and scheduling. Arch, the company’s AI-Enabled drive-thru ordering system, is recently capable of taking orders in Spanish and English with a 90% accuracy rate.

Ian Borden, Chief Financial Officer, said that Archy could occasionally reduce at least 50 labor hours per week in a typical McDonald’s. However, he said the intention is not to remove staffing. Instead, employees could concentrate more on hospitality.

Kempczinski expressed that the customers have responded positively to Archy in testing because it supports creating their orders more accurately.

“It’s not AI is bad or AI is good. We try to be really thoughtful about how we use it,” said Kempczinski.

McDonald’s is also introducing new employee training that would concentrate on hospitality and food quality, according to Tiffanie Boyd, McDonald’s chief people officer. The training would be more experience-based, showing employees what a perfectly cooked Big Mac tastes like, for example, and would focus on friendly connection with customers.

At the same time, McDonald’s is still concentrated on value. Kempczinski expressed concern about low-income consumers, classified as U.S. households making less than $45,000, who continue to purchase fast food; however, not as frequently as they used to. McDonald’s has been making good progress with its $5 meal deal. Therefore, the company is discovering ways to provide entry-level prices on basic menu items in the United States as it continues in Europe and other international markets.

“This is the environment that we’re in right now. You have to be on your game and deliver that value,” said Kempczinski. “The pressure around cost of living isn’t going away.”

McDonald’s U.S. franchisees typically pay $450,000 per decade on required store remodels. Underneath the company’s new plan, they would spend an additional $800,000 over time; however, McDonald’s would pay a portion of that cost in the form of rent relief and capital support.

Borden addressed that the investments would be phased in the meantime, when markets and individual franchisees are prepared for them. Once the investments are developed, the efficiency improvements would provide roughly $100,000 in annual cash flow benefits to the average U.S. restaurant, some of which could be reinvested in the restaurant.

“We’d love to see it going into hospitality to elevate the experience with our customers,” said Borden.
