A delegation from the European Union’s GSP+ Monitoring Mission paid a courtesy call on the Foreign Minister as part of their periodic review of Sri Lanka’s commitments under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+). The meeting focused on the country’s progress in upholding human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and good governance core conventions that underpin the GSP+ trade arrangement.
During the meeting, the Foreign Minister welcomed the delegation and reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to maintaining its obligations under the 27 international conventions required for continued access to the preferential trade scheme. He emphasized that the government remains engaged in implementing reforms and strengthening institutional frameworks to meet international expectations.
The GSP+ arrangement provides Sri Lanka with preferential access to the EU market, significantly boosting exports and economic growth. The Foreign Minister acknowledged the importance of the scheme to Sri Lanka’s economy and expressed appreciation for the EU’s continued support and constructive engagement.
The EU delegation highlighted areas of progress while also noting concerns that require further attention. Issues discussed included judicial independence, freedom of expression, labor rights, and the need for inclusive governance. The mission encouraged ongoing dialogue and transparency in addressing these concerns.
The Foreign Minister assured the delegation that the government is actively pursuing policy measures aimed at sustainable development and social equity. He welcomed technical assistance and continued cooperation with the EU to further align domestic practices with international standards.
The visit by the GSP+ Monitoring Mission reflects the strong partnership between Sri Lanka and the European Union. As both parties look ahead, the emphasis remains on mutual respect, dialogue, and shared responsibility in advancing democratic values and economic progress.
