New York City, New York — A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday (July 9) for the brand new 2 World Trade Center building.
According to officials, 2 World Trade Center would be the last commercial office tower to stand on the World Trade Center Campus. The building would become the new global headquarters for American Express.

The project is anticipated to develop over 3,200 construction jobs and would empower nearly $6 billion in New York City’s economy, Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported at the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday. It is predicted to be finished in 2031.
According to Mamdani, he said at the groundbreaking ceremony that once the building is completed, it hopes to help over 20,000 companies in New York City.
“When American Express moves in, this headquarters will contribute roughly $11.4 billion towards our economy, including nearly $250 million in tax revenue that will go towards paving potholes, improving schools and planting trees,” said Mamdani.
Governor Kathy Hochul made a press release statement from the office. American Express would be the only owner and occupant of the Building.
“From the union labor who will build this remarkable tower, to the thousands of American Express employees who will work here for generations to come, 2 World Trade Center will be a shining symbol of the resilience, excellence and opportunity that defines Lower Manhattan,” said Hochul.
