ROME, Italy — The Stadio Olimpico was bathed in a golden hue as the 2026 Golden Gala Pietro Mennea delivered a night of world-class athletics that will be remembered for years.
As a cornerstone of the Wanda Diamond League, the Rome meet saw several meet records fall, but the evening belonged to one man: Armand "Mondo" Duplantis.
The Swedish pole vault phenomenon once again defied the laws of physics, clearing a staggering 6.15m. This mark stands as the highest outdoor vault in history, surpassing his own previous world records and cementing his status as the greatest to ever grace the pit.
The Roman crowd was on its feet as Duplantis soared over the bar with room to spare, later attempting a height that would have shattered the absolute world record.
On the track, the sprints provided high-octane drama. South African powerhouse Akani Simbine claimed victory in the Men’s 100m, clocking a blistering 9.96s against a field that included the world's fastest. In the Women’s 100m, Jamaican legend Elaine Thompson-Herah proved her class remains permanent, securing gold with a time of 10.85s.
The middle-distance events were equally thrilling. In the Men’s 3000m, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo set a world-leading time of 7:26.64, while the hurdles saw dominance from Karsten Warholm and Femke Bol, who both secured convincing wins in their respective 400m hurdles disciplines. This edition of the Golden Gala was more than just a competition;
it was a testament to the peak of human performance, leaving fans and analysts eager for the next stop in the Diamond League.
