Authorities have announced the arrest of a man in connection with last week's deadly car bomb attack in Delhi. The incident claimed eight lives and left 20 injured, prompting the government to label it a "terrorist incident."
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) confirmed that the vehicle used in the attack was registered in the arrested suspect's name. The individual, identified as a resident of Indian controlled Kashmir, is accused of conspiring with the alleged suicide bomber.
The powerful explosion occurred near a metro station in close proximity to the Red Fort, a highly recognizable landmark in Delhi. This blast marks the first such incident in the heavily secured city since 2011.
According to reports, the attack unfolded on Monday evening at 18:52 local time. A slow moving vehicle reportedly halted at a busy traffic signal before detonating. Home Minister Shah confirmed within hours that the explosion involved a white Hyundai i20. Visual evidence from the scene depicted the charred remains of the white car alongside other vehicles, including an autorickshaw and cycle rickshaws, extensively damaged by the blast.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack as a "conspiracy" and pledged that the government would ensure the "perpetrators, their collaborators and their sponsors" face justice. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed profound sadness, calling the news "extremely heartbreaking."
Investigators are currently exploring potential links between this attack and recent arrests of seven men in Indian controlled Kashmir. Additionally, authorities are probing any connections to a recent seizure of 2,900 kilograms of explosives in a Delhi suburb. The Red Fort, a 17th century Mughal fortress, is a popular tourist destination and serves as the backdrop for the Prime Minister's annual Independence Day speeches.
