Bornstein Seafoods, a Washington-based seafood producer, has voluntarily recalled more than 44,000 pounds of ready-to-eat shrimp meat after routine sampling detected potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

According to a notice issued June 10 by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the recall was initiated after Listeria was found in an in-process shrimp sample at a food production facility. The company said it has since halted distribution of the affected product and launched a root cause investigation to determine the source of contamination.

“Listeria monocytogenes was detected in an in-process shrimp sample in a food production environment,” Bornstein Seafoods stated. “The company has ceased the distribution of the product as the company continues our root cause investigation as to what caused the problem.”

The recalled shrimp was sold under the Bornstein Seafoods brand as “Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat” in both 1-pound and 5-pound bags. These products were distributed to retailers and distributors in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada. However, the company warned that the products may have been further distributed to retailers across the U.S., though it is unclear which or how many.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall as of the FDA's latest update.

How to Identify the Affected Product:

Consumers can identify the recalled shrimp by checking for the following:

  • Brand: Bornstein Seafoods

  • Product Description: Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat

  • Sizes: 1 lb and 5 lb bags

  • Lot Codes: Located at the lower left corner of the master case label and at the bottom on the back of the product bag

Customers who find they are in possession of the recalled product are urged not to consume it and to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

For further information, Bornstein Seafoods directed all inquiries to the FDA’s public notice.
