A sprawling winter storm sweeping from the Rockies to Rhode Island is shaping a costly and potentially dangerous commute for more than 80 million Americans. The weather system is delivering heavy snow, ice, and gusty winds across a broad swath of the United States, with warnings stretching from the Midwest to New England and widening advisories along the East Coast.

Across the Ohio Valley and interior Northeast, snowfall is arriving at rates approaching an inch per hour, with the heaviest accumulation forecast for northern New York and New England through Wednesday morning. Some parts of Maine could see up to a foot of snow, and the interior Northeast could accumulate 6 to 10 inches, with localized amounts reaching 12 inches. The storm is expected to transition to a wintry mix in several coastal areas, including New Jersey and New York City, where rain is likely to accompany or replace snow at times.

State and local authorities acted ahead of the storm, with Governor Phil Murphy declaring a state of emergency for portions of New Jersey to mobilize resources and speed assistance. The declaration allows greater flexibility in state aid operations as crews prepare for mounting snow removal and road treatment efforts. In New York City, officials warned of a wintry mix and urged residents to prepare for deteriorating travel conditions.

The storm also disrupted daily life and school operations. In Missouri, winter weather closed schools and triggered closures elsewhere as the system moved east. In Ohio, communities prepared for heavy snowfall while regions in Pennsylvania and Maryland anticipated freezing rain in affected areas. The National Weather Service cautioned drivers to slow down, increase following distances, and stay updated on evolving conditions as the storm progresses along the I-95 corridor and into New England.

Weather officials emphasized that the cold front could persist through the week, potentially delivering record-breaking low temperatures in the Midwest by Thursday. Residents from coast to coast were urged to monitor forecasts and drive cautiously as crews work to keep roadways safe amid rapidly changing winter conditions.
