Amazon’s newest fulfilment centre near Hull has quickly become one of the company’s most advanced operations in the UK. Open for only a few months, the enormous site spans an area comparable to 11 football pitches and employs around 2,000 workers who are now preparing for one of the busiest shopping periods of the year as Black Friday approaches.

Inside the warehouse, bright yellow robots glide across the floor carrying tall shelves loaded with products. Guided by QR codes, the machines move with precise coordination, bringing items ranging from electronics to party accessories directly to employees. Staff pick and scan the products before placing them into containers that travel along long stretches of conveyor belts for packing and shipping.

The atmosphere on the warehouse floor feels energetic but controlled. Machines beep continuously, belts hum overhead and workers in orange vests move between stations. The integration of robotics plays a major role in keeping the workflow organised and fast, especially during the high demand of Black Friday.

Only trained staff are allowed inside the caged robotics area, where the automated shelves operate. Once products are placed into the pods by stowers, the system delivers them to workers who prepare them for packaging. From there, teams like the one led by area manager Grace Rutter take over. Grace oversees single item orders and manages a team of more than 50 employees. Her background in theatre and even fire breathing is a contrast to her current role, yet she says the experience helped her handle the pressure of managing large groups.

Despite the excitement inside, the warehouse has faced strong opposition from nearby residents since its planning stages. Concerns have included increased traffic, environmental impact and illuminated signs. Supporters have welcomed the job opportunities brought to the region.

As Black Friday nears, the site is running at full capacity. Management says additional staff have been hired to meet seasonal demand and efforts are being made to keep morale high, with festive events planned for employees and their families.
