U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday publicly urged Pope Leo XIV to exercise caution when speaking on theological matters, following the pontiff’s recent criticism of U.S. foreign policy.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Athens, Georgia, Vance pushed back against remarks made by the pope, who recently stated that Jesus “is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs.” Vance argued that such a perspective overlooks historical contexts, particularly major global conflicts.

Referencing World War II, Vance questioned whether moral clarity could be dismissed in situations like the Allied efforts against Nazi Germany. “Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated France from the Nazis? Was God on the side of those who freed Holocaust survivors?” he asked, adding that he believes the answer is affirmative.

Vance, a practicing Catholic who met the pope earlier this year, emphasized that while he appreciates the Church’s voice on issues such as abortion, immigration, and global peace, disagreements are inevitable. He stressed that both political leaders and religious figures carry responsibility when addressing sensitive topics.

“It’s important for public officials to be careful when discussing policy, just as it is for religious leaders to ensure their theological statements are grounded in truth,” Vance said during his address.

The remarks come amid rising tensions between the Vatican and U.S. political leadership. Donald Trump recently criticized the pope’s stance on international conflicts, calling his views weak on foreign policy. In response, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for peace, stating that his position is rooted in Gospel teachings and that he has “no fear” of political backlash.

The exchange has sparked debate within the American Catholic community, with several clergy members defending the pope and criticizing political attacks on religious leadership.

The controversy intensified further after Trump shared an AI-generated image portraying himself in a Christ-like role, which drew criticism from both supporters and religious groups. The image was later removed, with Trump stating it was intended as a symbolic reference rather than a literal depiction.

As discussions continue, the intersection of faith, politics, and global conflict remains a deeply contested space, with leaders on both sides shaping the narrative in increasingly public ways.
