North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has supervised fresh drone testing, state media KCNA reported. On Thursday, Kim reviewed tests of both tactical unmanned attack aircraft specifically “suicide drones” augmented with artificial intelligence and a strategic unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. He expressed satisfaction with the performance and has ordered efforts to further enhance the capabilities of the country’s unmanned aerial vehicles.
In addition to the drone trials, Kim inspected the construction of a large greenhouse farm in Sinuiju, a city near the border with China. The KCNA report emphasized a dual focus on military-technological development and agricultural infrastructure as part of North Korea’s strategic priorities.
These developments reflect ongoing efforts by Pyongyang to modernize its unmanned systems, integrating AI in both offensive and reconnaissance roles. The state agency said strengthening UAV capabilities was now an approved plan.
Observers note that North Korea has increasingly invested in drone technology as a relatively low-cost, low-risk complement to its conventional forces. The integration of AI into such systems points to growing ambitions for autonomy and precision across various defense domains.
The reports did not specify technical details such as payloads, ranges, or operational readiness of the new systems. Nonetheless, the announcement adds to a pattern of military advancements that analysts believe signal North Korea’s intent to expand its strategic reach, particularly across its border regions and in areas of potential tension with neighbouring states.
