In a significant cyber incident just days before Christmas, a pro-Russian hackers has claimed responsibility for a major cyberattack on France’s national postal service, La Poste, disrupting package deliveries and digital services nationwide.

According to prosecutors and French authorities, the cybercrime collective known as Noname057 (also referenced as NoName057(16)) asserted that it carried out a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack targeting La Poste’s central computer systems. The assault, which began on December 22, overwhelmed key infrastructure, rendering online parcel tracking, customer portals, and payment systems inoperable during one of the busiest periods of the year.

Disruption Amid the Holiday Rush

La Poste confirmed that its digital services remained unstable several days into the outage, leaving postal workers unable to track packages and delaying deliveries across France’s extensive network. The postal operator, which handled more than 2.6 billion packages in 2024 and employs over 200,000 staff, also saw its banking arm’s online systems affected, causing interruptions to digital payments and access.

France’s domestic intelligence agency, DGSI, has taken over the investigation following the claim from Noname057, and prosecutors say La Poste has filed a formal criminal complaint. Officials are also scrutinizing potential links between this attack and other recent disruptions attributed to state-linked cyber groups.

Broader Cybersecurity Concerns

Noname057 has been associated with previous high-profile cyberattacks across Europe, including incidents targeting NATO-related events and French government sites. European law-enforcement efforts earlier in 2025 included operations focused on curbing the group’s activities.

French authorities and allies have framed the incident within a larger pattern of what they describe as “hybrid warfare” tactics—a mix of cyberattacks, disinformation, and other disruptive acts—allegedly undertaken to destabilize Western nations supporting Ukraine.

Operational Impact and Response

While physical mail and basic postal functions continue in many locations, the digital disruptions have underscored vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure and have strained logistical operations at a key moment for consumers and businesses alike. Government officials and cybersecurity experts are urging enhanced protections for essential public services in response to the evolving threat landscape.
