President Donald Trump said the United States has carried out what he described as “powerful and deadly” airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) militants operating in north western Nigeria.
In a statement, Trump said the US military had “executed numerous perfect strikes” against the extremist group, which he referred to as “terrorist scum.” He accused IS fighters of targeting and brutally killing civilians, “primarily innocent Christians,” in the region.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) later confirmed that the operation took place on Thursday and was conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities. According to AFRICOM, the strikes targeted Islamic State elements in Sokoto State, an area that has seen increased militant activity in recent years.
While further operational details were not immediately released, US officials said the strikes were aimed at degrading the group’s ability to carry out attacks and at supporting Nigeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
Nigeria has long faced security challenges from extremist groups, including Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram, which have carried out deadly attacks on civilians, security forces, and religious communities. Violence linked to these groups has displaced millions and destabilized large parts of the country, particularly in the north and northeast.
The latest US action underscores Washington’s continued involvement in counter terrorism operations in Africa, where it works with regional partners to combat militant groups that pose threats to local populations and international security.
