A Utah judge ruled on Monday that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man charged with killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, will be permitted to wear regular clothing at all pretrial hearings but must remain physically restrained during proceedings due to safety concerns.

During a virtual hearing, Judge Tony Graf acknowledged that Robinson’s case has drawn extraordinary public and media attention, agreeing with defense attorneys that visible jail clothing or shackles could prejudice potential jurors. “Mr. Robinson shall be dressed as one who is presumed innocent,” Graf said. However, he denied Robinson’s request to appear without restraints, citing the severity of the charges and the need to protect court staff and participants. The judge also ordered that members of the media not photograph or film Robinson’s restraints.

Robinson faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. Prosecutors have indicated their intent to seek the death penalty.

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on September 10 at Utah Valley University in Orem during a public debate. Robinson was arrested two days later after voluntarily surrendering at a sheriff’s office in southern Utah, accompanied by his parents.

According to law enforcement officials, Robinson’s father identified him from photos released by authorities and persuaded him to turn himself in. Investigators also allege that Robinson confessed to the shooting in text messages to his roommate and on the social media platform Discord.

Judge Graf scheduled Robinson’s first in-person hearings for January 16 and January 30, 2026. Robinson, appearing remotely from jail with his video feed blacked out, spoke only to confirm his presence. He remains held without bail at the Utah County Jail as the case proceeds toward trial.
