Kia is recalling more than 80,000 vehicles in the United States after discovering a software defect that could cause the parking lights to malfunction, federal safety officials said this week.

The recall affects approximately 82,000 Kia K5 sedans from the 2025 model year, according to documents submitted by the South Korean automaker to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall notice states that a software glitch may cause the parking lights to flicker or fail, potentially reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash, especially in low-light conditions.

Kia said the issue can be resolved through either an over-the-air (OTA) software update or by visiting a Kia dealership for a free repair. The company will begin notifying vehicle owners by mail starting June 24, according to the recall documents.

Drivers can also check whether their vehicle is affected by visiting the NHTSA’s recall database at nhtsa.gov/recalls or by contacting Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542, referencing recall number SC341.

The recall adds to a growing list of safety issues in the auto industry. Other automakers, including Ford, Toyota, Nissan, and Volkswagen, have also issued significant recalls in recent weeks due to various mechanical and software problems.
