External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar warns that the world has entered a phase where political considerations overshadow economic logic, underscoring the urgency for India to diversify its supply chains. Speaking after receiving an Honorary Doctorate from IIM-Calcutta, he said this shift demands stronger national resilience and more reliable global partnerships.
Jaishankar noted that the United States, once the stabilizing force of the global economic order, is now pursuing individualized engagement, signalling the decline of multilateralism. He also pointed to China’s long-standing tendency to operate on its own terms, further heightening global unpredictability.
Amid geopolitical rivalry, conflicts, climate pressures, and supply-chain disruptions, he emphasized India’s drive for self-reliance through a stronger industrial base. Citing rapid improvements in transport, energy, and infrastructure, he said initiatives like ‘Make in India’ reflect a bold shift in ambition. Advanced sectors such as semiconductors, EVs, drones, nanotech, and biosciences, he added, offer India the opportunity to make global leaps.
On foreign policy, Jaishankar said India is expanding its global footprint and strengthening its role within the Global South as it progresses toward developed-nation status by 2047. Ensuring diversified, resilient, and future-ready supply chains, he stressed, is central to India’s long-term economic and security strategy.
