President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested that the ongoing government shutdown contributed to Republican losses in key races during Tuesday’s elections. Speaking at a breakfast with GOP lawmakers at the White House, Trump described the 36-day shutdown as a significant factor in the party’s setbacks.

“I think, if you read the pollsters, the shutdown was a big factor,” Trump said, adding that it had a negative impact for Republicans. He also acknowledged that some analysts cited his presence in political discourse as another possible influence, noting that he felt honored to be mentioned.

Trump’s remarks came after a strong showing by Democrats across several states. Voters expressed concerns about economic issues, which exit polls indicated played a key role in shaping their choices. Major Republican defeats included the New York City mayoral race, as well as gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia. Democrats also secured an expected win in California, where a new congressional map is projected to help the party gain five additional seats in next year’s U.S. House elections.

Reflecting on the broader implications of the election results, Trump said, “I don’t think it was good for Republicans. I don’t think it’s good. I’m not sure it was good for anybody.” His comments underscored the challenges facing the party amid voter concerns about governance and economic stability.

In response to the elections and ongoing shutdown, Trump called on lawmakers to bring the record-long government closure to an end. The 36-day shutdown has become the longest in U.S. history, affecting federal workers and government services nationwide.

Trump’s statements highlight the political fallout of the extended shutdown and signal pressure on congressional leaders to reach an agreement. Lawmakers now face mounting expectations to restore government operations while addressing voter concerns that influenced Tuesday’s election outcomes.
